Everton v Liverpool
Barclays Premier Reserve League North
KO: 19:00
ECCLESTON SINKS EVERTON
Nathan Eccleston smashed home a penalty to give Liverpool Reserves a well-earned 1-0 victory over Everton on Tuesday night.
Eccleston can't do anything wrong at the moment after getting his first-team debut last week, and the 18-year-old kept the second string top of the league by earning and converting a spot kick on the stroke of half-time. Gaffer John McMahon will be proud of his youngsters, who beat their more experienced neighbours without numerous youth international and Champions League players. It was a feisty occasion at the Stobart Stadium in Widnes, with the first of five bookings coming in the early moments when Everton No.7 Adam Forshaw lunged at Robbie Threlfall. Five minutes later Fazakerley-born Hope Akpan was equally reckless in challenging Reds skipper Steven Irwin. He was lucky not to see red. McMahon's young side kept their composure to win a series of early corners, the best of which allowed Chris Mavinga to rattle the bar. They threatened from open play too when Emmanuel Mendy sent in a peach of a cross on 17 minutes only for Nikola Saric to volley over. It took Everton almost 20 minutes to create anything at the other end, and when a dangerous centre did come in from James Wallace, Jose Baxter headed over. It was Liverpool who took the initiative throughout the first half and they earned a deserved lead seconds before the break when Eccleston ran at centre-back Shane Duffy. The Republic of Ireland youth international couldn't match his opponent for pace and conceded a penalty with a blatant trip. Eccleston stepped up to take the spot kick which, after a John Aldridge shuffle, burst the back of the net. Everton came out for the second period searching for a quick equaliser, but Hungarian stopper Peter Gulacsi was smart to Kieran Agard's early effort. Liverpool responded with a great cross from David Amoo, now sporting a white head bandage. No one was on the end of it but seconds later Eccleston tested goalkeeper Adam Davies from 20 yards. Things got ugly once again when Baxter came in late on Mendy, earning a yellow card for his trouble. It could well have been more. If McMahon was furious at that, his mood didn't lighten when Aristote Nsiala flung into Zsolt Poloskei and again escaped red. Liverpool created trouble for themselves when Gulacsi's weak header clear was handballed by Threlfall under pressure from Agard. The Everton striker stepped up to take the penalty but hit the post. The Blues could have had another spot kick when Mavinga dived in minutes later. The French defender made amends with a great tackle to thwart Cody Arnoux, while at the other end Poloskei came close with a fine effort from range. Man-of-the-match Mavinga put in another sterling challenge to stop Agard in his tracks with 10 minutes to go and Liverpool held on for the win. A late booking for Eccleston for a mis-timed challenge did little to dampen the mood, though McMahon will be concerned about Poloskei after he was stretchered off in stoppage time with a knee injury. Liverpool Reserves: Gulacsi, Mendy (Kohlert 85), Threlfall, Palsson, Mavinga, Irwin, Saric (Flora 89), Amoo, Eccleston, Poloskei, Kacaniklic (Brouwer 74). Unused subs: Hansen, Weijl.
