Arsene Wenger throws support behind 'super' Rafa Benitez - and drops retirement hint
Arsene Wenger has hailed the current Premier League title race as the most competitive ever, and also thrown his support behind beleaguered Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
Speaking exclusively to CNN International, the Arsenal manager said: "The Barclays Premier League this season is more open, more competitive than ever.
"Everybody's lost two games, at least. If it goes like that until the end, the championship winner will have lost seven games at least."
When asked about the pressure that Liverpool's Rafa Benitez is under, especially given that the Spaniard had a better win ratio in his first 200 games than both Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson, Wenger appeared to endorse his fellow manager's candidacy at Anfield.
"Rafa Benitez is a super manager. We live in a world where democratic judgment is only in the present, and that's why it's very important to have directors who are strong enough to resist to the judgment, who is sometimes infant, and as well to explain why they resist."
Wenger, who turned 60 last week, also dropped a hint that he'd like to have retired from management before he reached the end of his next decade - although conceded that the "decision does not depend only on me".
"At the moment, I don't think it's a problem because I still feel in a very good shape, physically.
"But you have to be on alert and test. Have you still the animal force that needs to be behind every manager?
"I don’t think I can manage at 70. I will work if 'm lucky enough to be healthy. But certainly not on the pitch anymore."
