Colin Todd recently told police after suffering fan abuse at Doncaster.
Have football fans got more malicious in their chants as compared to years gone by?
OR
Fans pay their money and if players/managers take abuse then tough.
What does everyone else think?

fans used to be funny - especially the Kop which was known by other fans as been witty and very comical in their chants.
we still are but especially at Old Trafford i hear chants that just go over the line
i felt genuinely sorry for Arsene Wenger a couple of years back everytime he stood to give instruction to the team the mancs were chanting 'sit down you p*******le' i thought it was well out of order and not in the least necessary.
yet the same fans chanted at Everton 'champions league - your havin a laugh' which i did find funny
bring back the wit and humour thats what i say

I think that if football managers/players want to earn these massive salaries ie £80-90,000 a week then i think its only right that the average fan is entitled to shout abuse at them if they are not performing to the level that their wages dictate.
However, the wit of the fans is maybe a thing of the past, as football seems to now be taken more serious than it was

Some abuse yes and some no. If a player is not performing then i think the fans have the right to let him know it. But when it becomes racist or personal then i think it is going to far. Chants like the one Gerrard4eva mentioned should not be a part of the game.

The chants have got too personal I know Gerrard said it was better in the old days but when we signed John Barnes didnt he have terrible probs at Everton eg who used to unfurl a banner saying 'proud to be white' that wouldnt be allowed in this days

Players are getting wrapped in cotton wool poor things - footie banter has always been part of the game - it gives atmosphere to a game

People in general (including footy players) are getting too precious. For instance the dipstick who reported Joey Barton to the boys in blue for baring his bum on Saturday. This was after Barton had been subject to abuse about his brother. Barton took it in good spirit and was smiling as he bared his bum. Why didn't the Neverwon fan just take it in the same spirit. Like I said ''precious''. Talking of Saturday and going off topic for a mo. Does anyone else think that Andy Johnson's goal should have been chalked up as an OG. This is the second this season that he's been credited with when they were going well wide but for striking an opposition player.
