RAFA TO SWOOP - 5 Jan 07 LIVERPOOL are closing in on January targets Lucas Neill and Javier Mascherano - with an Anfield board meeting today expected to open the door to their arrival. As the DIC takeover saga nears a successful conclusion at Liverpool, Rafa Benitez is seeking a swift completion of deals which have been a priority for several months. The Reds boss wants the players in place early during the transfer window, and hopes there will be no delays which may prove costly to his plans. Both Neill and Argentinian Mascherano are ready to move to Anfield, but the finishing touches are still to be put in place. * with thanks Liverpool Echo me says ****controversial**** ![:o](http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k25/scousysmurf/smilies/Yikes.gif)

latest update on this story folks!!!5 Jan 07 RAFA BENITEZ last night struck an amazing deal for Javier Mascherano - which left Liverpool heading for a huge row with FIFA over the transfer. The Argentina World Cup star, 22, has undergone a medical at Anfield and will sign a loan deal until the end of the season with a view to a permanent £6million deal. But Liverpool are taking a gamble because Mascherano will have to get clearance from football's governing body over their strict transfer rules. Mascherano, owned by investment group Media Sport Investment, had a move to Juventus fall through this week as FIFA regulations stop players from turning out for more than two clubs in the year beginning July 1, and he had already appeared for Corinthians. FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren admitted they got involved after Liverpool contacted them last night. He said: "The rule is binding. There is no provision that allows for any kind of wavering of the rule." But Benitez has persuaded Liverpool to push the deal through and Mascherano's agent Pini Zahavi is confident of overturning the rule as the midfielder played so few games for West Ham. Hammers boss Alan Curbishley wants to keep the other MSI Argentinian, striker Carlos Tevez. *with thanks Mirror Sport my word:
good Lord what goes on here, as dudgeon says he has hardly impressed at the hammers - ![:-X](http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k25/scousysmurf/smilies/13TH.gif)

A deal has been agreed with west ham for mascheranos transfer, however, it now depends on whether or not fifa will sanction the move. fifa rules state you cannot play for more than 2 clubs a season, Rafa is saying that corinthians season was over before his west ham transfer. so he has only played official matches for 1 club. Hopefully Liverpool will be his 2nd!

Yes I would mate,I think they had a bit of a push into the west ham deal to be honest. from what i have heard and seen of him before he went to the hammers he has got a lot of talent. what would it hurt to get him on loan and see how he goes,if it's not working out then don't sign him at the end of the loan period.
Also heard a rumour that the takeover went threw on the 4th and will be announced in the next two weeks. Me thinks someone is trying to keep it on the hush till transfer window closes!

that would definately make sense, i think their reputation was slightly tarnished at the hammers, i mean im sure you are like me and remember the shock that they even considered signing for them and there were all the rumours about chelsea coming in for them but as you rightly say mate, whats the harm in looking at the lad? and playing with a better class of player (no disrespect to west ham) is bound to make a difference ![:-[](http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k25/scousysmurf/smilies/12TH.gif)
